A digital product packaging design created in contemporary minimalism, a style known for the belief that "less is more."
The Concept
My goal was to create a stylistically cohesive, visually peaceful, and authentic down-to-earth design for a skin care brand named Still. Cosmetics using a style called Contemporary Minimalism in 2 weeks.
I started by collecting artistic inspiration from the interior designers, minimalist artists, and brands with similar brand identities. This style centers around the idea that "less is more," uncluttered surfaces, neutral colors, and raw materials like linen and wood. Traditional Minimalism is a similar style of design, however Contemporary Minimalism also places an emphasis on inner peace, comfort, and serenity within the mind.
Next, I settled on a color palette and 2 typefaces. A neutral mid tone green and soft tan were chosen to reflect the raw materials and naturalistic ingredients used, cream was inspired by the color of skincare products like moisturizer/lotion, and a soft black was used as a high contrast color. For the typefaces, I decided upon a delicate serif font that reflected the brand's values, as well as a minimalist sans-serif font that emulated a clean and uncluttered space.
The Process
During my process, I implemented the same grid for every product. This ensured the designs remained consistent and balanced between products. Research was also pivotal during this stage, since all of the ingredients and skincare benefits needed to be clean, organic, and scientifically proven to improve skin. This meant additives like fragrance were not used in Still. Cosmetics, however many of the products include disclaimers about being Cruelty-free, Alcohol-free, and Paraben-free.
Since Contemporary Minimalist operates on the idea that "less is more," I created visual interest using hierarchy and texture.
The Product
Once polishing the flat design, I placed it into a digital mockup to simulate a manufactured product design. After a bit of tweaking on the flat design to increase legibility and contrast, Still. Cosmetics was complete.
